Markus Maximus Wins Gr1 West Australian Derby

Tuesday, 14th April 2009

NZ Rich Hill Stud stallion Pentire (Be My Guest-Gull Nook, by Mill Reef) added a Gr1 triumph when gelded son Markus Maximus (Pentire-Shafty Lady, by Last Tycoon) prevailed in a 3-way photo-finish (& then survived a protest by the 3rd-placed favourite) in the $500,000 Gr1 West Australian Derby (2400m) for 3YOs at Ascot in Perth. Markus Maximus (ridden by Luke Nolen for trainer Peter Moody) scored by a head from the colt Berlioz (Zabeel-Jervaux, by Slavic) with a further long-neck to favoured colt Phenomenons (Giant's Causeway-Demanding, by Octagonal). Markus Maximus (a NZ$60,000 yearling consigned by Waikato Stud at the 2007 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka) now has 3 wins & 3 placings from 6 starts for $352,575 earnings.
