European Star Spotlights NZ Windsor Park Dam
In New Zealand, last weekend's victory by 3YO colt Eagle Mountain (Rock Of Gibraltar-Masskana, by Darshaan) against older horses in Ireland's Gr2 Royal Whip Stakes (10 furlongs) at The Curragh (following his runner-up in the Gr1 English Derby in June & 3rd in the Gr1 Irish Derby in July) provided major excitment at Windsor Park Stud, which owns Eagle Mountain's half-sister Guinevere (Fairy King-Masskana) in partnership with Auckland businessman John Thompson. Windsor Park boss Nelson Schick noted: "When we bought Guinevere, little did we realise what a significant broodmare her dam Masskana was going to turn out to be. Guinevere was Masskana's 1st foal & she has since produced 3 stakes-winners including 2YO Gr1 winner Sulk & now Eagle Mountain." Eagle Mountain adds further lustre to a family developed by The Aga Khan which has also produced Gr1 French 1000 Guineas winner Masarika. Guinevere's yearling filly (by Windsor Park's champion NZ sire of the last 6 seasons Volksraad) sold at this year's NZ Bloodstock Karaka Premier Sale for NZ$300,000; she also has a Thorn Park colt to be offered at the Karaka Premier Sale next January; & she is due to foal again to Volksraad.
