Payne Wins 1st Jumps Start

Friday, 1st July 2005

Former star flat jockey Patrick Payne produced the perfect start to his jump riding career yesterday when he led all the way to win the Golfhouse Hotel Maiden Hurdle (2800m) at Ballarat on Sweet Shani (trained by his sister Therese Patton). Payne told TVN on dismounting: "What a terrific thrill. I was a bit nervous going to the barriers, but the mare jumped beautifully throughout." Payne, 30, rode 18 Gr1 winners on the flat (including the 2002 Cox Plate on former Australian Horse-Of-The-Year Northerly) before retiring last year due to weight problems.
