Azamour Wins UK Gr1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes
In England overnight, former Woodlands Stud shuttler Night Shift (Northern Dancer-Ciboulette, by Chop Chop) added another Gr1 success when the Aga Khan’s 4YO Irish home-bred entire Azamour (Night Shift-Asmara, by Lear Fan) scored a 1.5-lengths victory in the £350,000 Gr1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (10 furlongs) on “a shifting surface” at Royal Ascot at York, reported Azamour (ridden by Mick Kinane for trainer John Oxx) defeated the Aidan O’Brien-trained fellow 4YO entire Ace (Danehill-Tea House, by Sassafras) & Australia’s globe-trotting front-runner & 5-time Gr1 winner Elvstroem (Danehill-Circles Of Gold, by Marscay); last year’s champion 3YO filly & US Eclipse Award winner Ouija Board (making her 4YO debut) finished 7th. Azamour (who won the Gr1 St James’s Palace Stakes at last year’s Royal Ascot) now has 5 wins (also including the Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes) in 9 career starts. His sire Night Shift (who stood at Woodlands for 4 seasons) “has over 75 stakes-winners world-wide & 8 individual Gr1 winners” (also including In The Groove, Daryaba, Listening, Lochangel, Creaking Board, Nicolotte & Australian colt Align). Meanwhile trainer Tony Vasil said Elvstroem will have 1 more European start, probably in the French Grand Prix de Saint Cloud, before returning to stud in Australia.(June 16)
