Kenny Calls For Summit On Small Sydney Sat Fields
Sydney Turf Club chief executive Michael Kenny told The Sydney Morning Herald "a summit of NSW racing should be called over the poor Saturday fields" which columnist Max Presnell branded "a blight on Sydney racing". In what Presnell colourfully called "another attempt to urinate into a gale of drongo thinking", Kenny said: "Racing NSW & the clubs, metropolitan & provincial, should sit down & decide whether there are too many meetings at certain times of the year. Normally when it is broached, the answer comes from Racing NSW that we have to provide so many races every year because of an agreement with the TAB for the benefit of the industry. I don't think that is true. Surely the TAB, seeing 5 & 6-horse fields would be interested in getting better turnover on local races with bigger fields." Kenny added: "We have been talking about this for a long time. Obviously the system needs a change, but who will implement it?"

Bookies To Sue Racing NSW Over Product Fee
Corporate bookmakers "have vowed to take on Racing NSW in court, after Racing Victoria changed its product fee policy to a gross profit model," reported The Daily Telegraph. Victoria previously charged wagering operators up to 1% of total turnover to publish & use Victorian race fields; they will now be required to pay a base rate 10% profit (& a premium rate 15% during the October-November Spring Carnival). However Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'Landys commented he would not be making any changes to the NSW race fields legislation (currently 1.5% of turnover) noting: By changing to a gross profit model we would virtually become partners with corporate bookmakers & we could not give participants any certainty of a fixed income." Leading bookmaker Michael Sullivan responded that court action against Racing NSW was now certain, declaring: "This decision shows just why Victoria is the most powerful state in the country. While we are happily paying a fee to Racing Victoria, we will be fighting Racing NSW in court."

Tatts Confirms Interest In Tabcorp Vic Licence
Tatts Group chief executive Dick McIlwain confirmed his company "intended lodging a registration of interest in the new Victorian wagering licence (which runs from 2012) but there were no guarantees that it would lodge a formal bid," reported The Australian Financial Review. The newspaper noted Tatts (which already runs the TAB in Queensland, South Australia & the Northern Territory) "has been tipped as a front-runner to wrestle the licence from Tabcorp". Interested parties are required to lodge a registration of interest by a deadline of 16 January 2009 under a 2-stage process for a 12-year licence to operate a retail network for the TAB in Victoria, plus a betting exchange. McIlwain noted: "We'll certainly lodge a (registration). It's not a foregone conclusion that we'll proceed beyond that." Stay tuned!
